Killing the Books, specification:
by shooting
by burning
by drowning
by cutting
by gluing
by painting white, or red, or black
etc.

Milan Knizak’s concise laconic Fluxus instruction for an action microstructurally recreates a fateful image in which war and art are implied and cynically caricatured: “Killing the Books by shooting by burning by drowning by glueing by painting white, or red, or black etc.” (1965–1970). The compact performance directions invoke images of books in flames, the atomic bomb, Suprematism, Abstract Expressionism, and collage. They thrust both realities – those of war and art –
into confusion. (Object Destruction. From Damaged Work to Denial of Reality by Gunnar Schmidt, Kunstforum International, 2015)
