The text from the Spiritual Song (1578-1585) by John of the Cross surprises the contemporary reader by its repetitive form. A single sentence punctuated by commas invites repeated reading.Embroidering the poem on this long metal net requires a precise and dry hand movement so that the thread does not catch on the unevenness of the metal. The tip of the embroidery hook, which passes between the metal meshes, makes a noise with each pass. A constant ‘clack’ that guides the hand and sets the pace for the embroidered. The repetition of the gestures, the sound and the words to be embroidered, leads to a trance, the hands begin to move of their own accord. The chain stitch connects with the metal while the poem anchors itself in the thoughts.
